David began the meeting by introducing colleagues from the SQA. Isabel was asked for any SQA updates. She stated that there was nothing too pressing, however she encouraged everyone to regularly check the SQA website (www.sqa.org.uk) for updates. Isabel mentioned that there was now a useful search engine for navigating the site. Isabel agreed to attach the most recent information on future developments within SQA products.

Veronica spoke briefly about the potential benefits for those delivering Access units from the resources contained within the 5-14 area of the LTS website (http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/5to14/).

Anne enquired as to whether funding exists to develop resources for Access clusters, now that Higher Still development funding seems to have ceased. Susan said that some authorities have run development days where resources have been produced on the understanding that they would then be shared. David mentioned the project that Hillside have received funding from the Executive for. This will lead to the production of Access resources and more accessible (amended) NABs, taking into account the theory that children possess “Multiple Intelligences” (see http://www.flatprojects.org.uk/hillsideschool.asp).

There was a brief discussion of the IACN (Inter Authority Collaborative Network) – see http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/nq/localauthority.asp. Colleagues were given information on how to access resources produced by this group and costs.

Janet requested from our SQA representatives that teachers of the visually impaired be involved in the future development of resources and NABs.

The group then ‘broke’ into groups looking at:

The SNAP Science folder

Online, Flexible and Distance Learning (OFDL) materials for ALL Core Skills (at http://www.ltscotland.org.uk/nq/ics/)

Managing Environmental Resources (MER) materials

5-14 Online at www.LTScotland.org.uk

SCRAN (www.scran.ac.uk) – “Scran is the learning image service with 300,000 images, movies and sounds from museums, galleries, archives and the media.” David stated that those interested in registering for SCRAN should contact Neil Fraser [neil.fraser@scran.ac.uk].

The next meeting of the Access Network will take place on Friday, 9th September 2005 at Hillside School.
